Does the Metronome Help?

The metronome is an invaluable tool. It helps you to be precise when counting and develops an inner rhythmical sense. The following are two suggestions for helpful ways to use the metronome.

A common rhythmical problem is the tendency to slow down when playing softly and speed up when playing loudly. After playing this way for a while you will become unaware of this error. The metronome will identify and locate this problem and help you keep a steady beat.

The metronome is great for increasing the tempo of a piece. Set the speed at a comfortable level, then ladder up. In other words, increase the speed one notch at a time until you arrive at the desired tempo.

Avoid over using the metronome - it will become a crutch. Develop your inner rhythmical sense by attempting to generating the beat from within. Remember to count aloud when playing with the metronome.
