What is the Trager® Approach?

The Trager® approach is a unique form of bodywork and movement re-education that can teach you to release habitual stress, tension and pain.

It seeks to empower you to explore the possibilities and benefits of ways of moving that are calmer, more conscious, more functional...even joyful. It is referred to as an approach because it is about discovering, through movement, how effortless every moment of conscious life can be.

It is based on two key premises:

  • First, that much chronic physical and emotional discomfort and pain as well as many functional limitations result from learned habits and mental patterns. For example, we may walk the way we walk because we have done so for decades without giving it a second thought, even though our gait may be the source of back pain.

  • Second, that the mind and body have great capacity to learn and change -- if given a good reason to.

This work seeks to create the conditions for genuine choice and change by providing the direct felt experience of how things could be otherwise: softer, fuller, gentler, easier...
