The usual first instructions for problems with text connections are to
  check the settings:

8-N-1 = 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit
Terminal type or emulation: vt100 (or vt102, or ansi)

Thanks Chris, but I already was using ISO-8859-1 in the
character set in my PINE configuration.

It would seem that you would need to enable another
feature of PINE to allow the proper coding-encoding
of 8 bit characters in the new version of PINE.

When looking at the help menu of a particular option I was
already using prior to the change, I came upon something
which you might have to enable so as to allow the system
to code-decode these characters properly.

The option I was using is called "enable-8bit-esmtp-
negotiation" and the option mentioned is "Extended SMTP
(ESMTP) with an extension called "8BITMIME".

As I do not know what these mean, all I can say is that,
before the change, my configuration worked and now, it does
not.

E-mail seems to decode properly, but News does not anymore.

I'm seeing accents in News postings, just using the default
    settings.

Me too, I see accents. The problem is not the display,
but the coding-encoding of these 8-bit characters from
TFN and to the recipient.

I have eliminated the recipient as the problem because
the problem occurs everywhere. And everywhere, other
posts are properly decoded except mine.

The reason why we don't see it at TFN is because there
is no problem for TFN to communicate with TFN.

I still don't see a problem; I looked at one of your posts from the TFN,
posted today. I got it from a German news server, received it over
Rogers Hispeed service. The accents are there:

*
Claude Latr=E9mouille
*
   =3D=3D=3D claudel@torfree.net =3D=3D=3D
   =3D=3D=3D CLAUDE LATR=C9MOUILLE =3D=3D=3D

=3D=3D=3D

It left the TFN with accents intact.

Velocet is posting things it had not posted for five days.
So, one post of mine was composed *before* the PINE change
and posted by velocet today. That's why there is no problem
with that post.

Here are two examples of what goes on. the first example is
ok, when PINE was working properly:

See? The 8-bit has not been coded-decoded properly in
this case. In the first case, it was. Look at the
header, you will see a difference in the items which
have to do with Contents. That is where the problem lies.
QUOTED PRINTABLE should not be there and 8BIT should be
there.

And here is the HELP menu for the option I was talking about:

PINE 4.44 HELP FOR SETUP CONFIGURATION No Messages
                      FEATURE: enable-8bit-to-smtp-server

This feature affects Pine's behavior when sending mail. Internet
standards require that all electronic mail messages traversing the global
Internet consist of 7bit ASCII characters unless a pair of cooperating
mail transfer agents explicitly agree to allow 8bit messages. In general,
then, exchanging messages in non-ASCII characters requires MIME encoding.
However, there are now Internet standards that allow for unencoded 8bit
exchange of messages between cooperating systems. Setting this feature
tells Pine to try to negotiate unencoded 8bit transmission during the
sending process. Should the negotiation fail, Pine will fall back to its
ordinary encoding rules.

Note, this feature relies on your system's mail transport agent or
configured "smtp-server" having the negotiation mechanism introduced in
"Extended SMTP" (ESMTP) and the specific extension called "8BITMIME".
ESMTP allows for graceful migration to upgraded mail transfer agents, but
it is possible that this feature might cause problems for some servers.

Good. I understand that there's still a need for text-based service,
especially among the handicapped.

I haven't looked in personally, but a couple of days ago exactly the same
problem was described to me by TFN member Rabin Chatterjee. Since Rabin
is a long-time user of TFN, I suspect that there must be some change at
the TFN site that is making this happen.

> I figured you may have been through a few of these diagnostics before.

My visited to the TFN over the last six months or so have been almost
entirely via Telnet. But I'll try to make a little time and come in on
serial service and see what happens. I'll let you know.

I'll try to run a test from my own location first. Then I'll get back to
you and maybe, if appropriate, I'll contact George.

Thanks for your replies. I'm running system 7.5 on a Mac Powerbook 145 and
my communications software is Z-term v 0.9. I haven't found a Kermit
command in it yet, so I'll check the manual. It does support x,y and z
modem protocols. I will explore the z modem menu you've set up and keep
trying. Thanks again for the
quick assistance. Ion bj321

There is no need to uuencode the file to attach it to Pine. Just
enter the file name on the Attchmnt: line.

Are you using Lynx, or the Zmodem upload menu ('z' from the main TFN
    menu)?

If you are using the menu, what settings have you tried?

One user reported that he got it to work by using "Escape all
    control characters".

I repeat, what function on the TFN are you using?

Are you using Lynx, or the Zmodem upload menu ('z' from the main TFN
    menu)?

If you are using the menu, what settings have you tried?

I haven't bothered with PPP to date, as I have a 486 and a slow 14.4 Kb/s
modem, but I recently tried out the free (for non-commercial use) download
(http://www.qnx.com/demodisk/download/modem.html), where I downloaded the
DOS version. When I tried out the PPP interface with the TFN, the default
login script failed and disconnected at 30 seconds.

I found no help - but an example for Win 95 would probably do. If I can
get this running, it would be an interesting low-tech interface.

I would be like to help out by writing some FAQs or HOWTOs - at least in
ASCII, but if we need HTML, I'll need a mentor/editor. (Although I would
like to learn HTML.)

Required: 386 CPU, 8 MB RAM, VGA, 1.44 MB floppy drive, (mouse useful but
may not be absolutely necessary using hot keys).

Not Required: A hard drive!

I was subscribed to several busy newsgroups, back brfore we temporarily
lost our e-mail connection to the Internet. As of Aug. 4, some of these
newsgroups were completely empty (0 messages), and others had a single
message saying "Group Download in Progress", dated Jun 5.

Expecting that it would take a while to catch up, I waited. As of today,
the only change is the dates are now Jun 16.

Just wondering what the problem is, and if it can be fixed easily.

We just got word back yesterday from velocet that they had made some
changes on their feed. I'm told the only solution is to start fresh
subscribing to the same groups.(let us know if that works please) I don't
know if we can save the text of the current subscribed groups and email
them to people. I am not sure if this applies to ppp news subscriptions
too. Knowing where to post the announcement is the next problem, but if
ppp is affected too, email may be the best with a brief announcement for
text users in motd and for ppp the torfree.net home page login status
headers pointing to email details.

I have just installed a script to update users' newgroup files; you
    should see this message once:

The recent problems with our newsgroup feed have been resolved.

However, it has required resetting your newsgroup file. This
means that old messages will show up.

Also, it may take a few minutes before any messages show up the
first time you read a newsgroup.

Great... thanks for taking care of this. Do you have any idea if ppp
offline newsreaders would be affected?

    { If they're using PPP they're not off-line :) }

    Probably.

If the newsreader keeps track of read messages in a .newsrc file,
it's just a matter of removing the numbers after the newsgroup:

           comp.unix.shell: 1-13063,13323,13390-13424

    Change to:

           comp.unix.shell:

I don't know about other (non Unix-style) newsreaders. Perhaps just
unsubscribing and resubscribing will do it. If not, delete any
    configuration file and resubscribe.

You appear to be a text user, so these instructions start from
    that assumption.

First, you must upload the file from your computer to your TFN
    account.

    The easiest way is to  press 'z' at the main menu;

Press 'u', then tell your terminal program to upload the file using
    Zmodem.

Go to Pine (#1 on the main menu).
Press 'c' to compose a message.
    Move to the "Attachment:" line.
Enter the file name and press ENTER.

If you have a problem uploading the file, try different settings
    on the 'z' upload menu.

I just tried a bunch of gopher://...addresses - and none worked - not even
the U. of Minnesota (home of the Gopher).

Has the protocol been "turned off", or has it just died off? There was
some useful archival stuff there, once upon a time.

I tried the PAP/CHAP option - it just appears to use the "emptyscript",
so it failed.

My problem seems to be that QNX presents a default window to configure a
login script (which I happened to call "tfn":

  "ssword" $PASSWORD

and another window to enter my username and password.

modifying this to:

  "ame:" $USER Logging in
  "ssword:" $PASSWORD

fails at "username:", regardless of whether there is a colon or 1, 2, or 3
spaces after the colon.

Interestingly, the "Compuserve" option seems to work after modification,
at least as far as replying with my userid
"\P32CIS\r\P32cx555/GO:PPPCONNECT" - but on the NEXT line
- causing it to fail before "password:":

  "ame:" \P32CIS\r\P32$USER/GO:PPPCONNECT
  "word:" \P32$PASSWORD

by modifying to:

  Wait For: Reply With: Status:
  \ \P1E Logging in
  "ame:" $USER
  "word:" $PASSWORD

it seems to work, as I can see the screens go by, until it gets to
"press any key to continue", where it times out at 30 seconds and says
"script failed".

Perhaps someone who is using PPP can give me a clue as to how to configure
this. Watching how this works when I attempt to dialup, I can't get it
past this stage.

It is awkward, but not impossible to work with no mouse at all. As in
Windows, you can use "hotkeys". If <Alt> and the underlined letter
doesn't work, <Tab> and <Shift>-<Tab> will let you highlight a button, and
then press <Enter>. At the PAP/CHAP window, <Tab> followed by the down
arrow will let you select other options, such as "manual" - which works
in text mode. <Ctrl>-<Esc> is equivalent to pressing the QNX button to
access the main menu. <Alt>-<Esc> swaps windows.

I seem to be having trouble downloading files created in the last day or
so. Only one success in 8 or 10 tries, files sized 5-6 K & 60-70 K.
I tried both Zmodems and Kermit. I also tried comparable old files, which
worked every time, in between the recent files which failed. I had also
downloaded several big chunks of old mail just previously, without a
hitch.

I have to abort all the failures, as they stick with "Status Waiting for
sender ..." (Zmodems) or quit after something like 87 bytes transferred
(Kermit).

Any ideas what's up?

It seems to work if the filename conforms to the DOS 8.3 convention when
saved from mail to files, but not if the filename is shortened before download.
It used to work.

Helo, dear torfree HelpDesk reps!
Please, help me with the PPP dial-up setup.
I use a linux box.
The pieses information I need are:
   * the local phone number to dial
   * the DNS server name and IP address
   * the authentification method used (Manual, PAP, CHAP)

I am currently able to connect to the text console

Email.kabapeter@dr.com
Attention: President/CEO.

 REQUEST FOR URGENT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP.

Firstly I must solicit your strictest confidence in this subject. This is by =
virtue of its nature as being utterly confidential and top secret. A member =
of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (N.E.P.C.) who was part of the =
federal government delegation to your country during a trade exhibition gave =
your particulars to me. I have decided to seek a confidential operation with =
you in the execution of the deal described hereunder for the benefit of all =
the parties and hope that you keep it top secret because of the nature of the =
business.

Within the ministry of petroleum resources where work as a director of =
engineering and projects, and with the co-operation of four other very top =
officials, we have under our control as overdue contract payments, bills =
totaling Thirty One Million United States Dollars, which we want to transfer =
to a foreign account, with the assistance and co-operation of a foreign =
company to receive the said funds on our behalf or a reliable foreign =
individual account to receive the funds.

The source of the fund is as follows: during the last military government =
here in Nigeria which lasted bout eleven months, government officials set up =
companies and awarded themselves various contracts which were grossly =
over-invoiced in various ministries. The present civilian government is not =
aware of the atrocities committed by their predecessors and as a result, we =
have a lot of such over invoiced contract payment s pending which we have =
identified floating at the central bank of
Nigeria ready for payment. However by virtue of our position as civil =
servants, we cannot acquire this money in our names. I was therefore =
delegated as a matter of urgency by my colleagues to look for an over seas =
partner into whose account we would transfer the sum of US$31,000,000.00 =
(THIRTY ONE MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS) hence we are writing you this =
letter.

Since the present civilian government is determined to pay foreign =
contractors l debts owed so as to maintain an amiable relationship with =
foreign governments and non-government financial agencies. We have decided =
to include our bills for approval with the co-operation of some officials of =
the federal ministry of finance (F.M.F) and the central bank of Nigeria =
(C.B.N). We are seeking your assistance in providing us with a good company =
account or any other offshore bank account into which we can remit this money =
by acting our main partner and trustee or acting as the original contractor. =
This we can do by swapping of account information and changing of beneficiary =
and other pertinent information to apply for payment. By this act, we would =
be using your company information to apply for payment, and prepare letters =
of claim and job description on behalf of your company. This process would =
be an internal arrangement with the departments concerned.

I have the authority of my partners involved to propose that should you be =
willing to assist us in this transaction, your share as compensation will be =
us$6.2 million (20%), us$21.7 million (70%) for us and us$3.1 (10%) for =
taxation and miscellaneous expenses.

The business itself is 100% safe, provided you treat it with utmost secrecy =
and confidentiality. Also your area of specialization is not m hindrance to =
the successful execution of this transaction. I have reposed my confidence =
in you and hope that you will not disappoint me. I will bring the complete =
picture of the transaction to your knowledge when I have heard from you.

 Thanks for your co-operation,
 Yours faithfully,
 Eng peter kaba

I had some similar problems back before Christmas. I was told that they
were due to a defective hard drive "losing" a block of registry data, and
failing to let me log in - but I believe that the problem was fixed. Are
you still having trouble logging in? Or are you cut off after you are
successfully logged in?

Perhaps someone should give Robert a telephone call if we don't hear from
him soon.

According to the system password file, you are a basic user, and have
already used up your 20 minutes for today. So for the rest of the day
you are limited to two minute sessions. If you are supposed to be a Plus
member, please contact the office to have this situation corrected.

Hello!
I'm Chernikova Maria.
I known about you from http://www.torfree.net/announcements.html
I would like to work in your organization as a volunteer.
I'm 21, I have pedagogical education and some experience in such fields as:
pedagogic, medicine (as a nurse).
Can you tell me what kind of works for volunteers you have?

With respect, Maria.

Glad to hear from you. We certainly appreciate volunteers. There are a
variety of ways you can help.

In the past, we have given short courses in libraries, church halls, etc.
about how to connect your computer to the internet, for example. Your
teaching experience could be useful here (Not everybody can stand in
front of 20 strangers and try to explain something complicated to them.)
I'm just guessing that during your nursing experience you used computer
networks. Please tell us a little more about yourself - we could match
you with someone who is familiar with the "nuts and bolts", if needed.

> Can you tell me what kind of works for volunteers you have?

I know that the Office frequently needs help. Talk to them at:
416-204-9257, Tues. & Thurs. 10am - 5pm, or via e-mail at:
office@torfree.net

humanrcs@torfree.net is also looking for volunteers.

Your enthusiasm may be your (and our) biggest asset.

Thank you.

Hello All:

In my opinion whoever sent the previous Press Release on the =
tfn-help@torfree.net should check out their agreement with tfn before =
they attempt to send out info about stuff for sale.

I respect that there are those of us who may hold the same opinion, and =
there are those of us who do not.

It was my understanding that TFN has a certain obligation and one of =
those is to enforce the requirements of being a TFN member is not to =
encourage the use of SPAM (unsolicited E_mail).

If you feel the same as I Congratulations. If you feel contrary that the =
sender's purpose is a valid use of the tfn-help e-mail newslist then I =
respectfully disagree, and believe it should have been posted in Ontario =
Forsale or similar newsgroup.

Perhaps the administrators can clarify the previous post and advise of =
the function of tfn-help@torfree.net

Sincerely,

aj342@torfree.net

Hi,

I'm cc'ing Samuel Sandler who's been using our system
to transfer files from his Apple IIc to his new
computer via zmodem and our e-mail service.

Unfortunately, Samuel and I had problems getting
zmodem to work, I'm not familliar with its use. Samuel
doesn't seem to have ready access to an ftp program
either.

If anyone could help us figure out how to use zmodem,
or could point us to a tutorial that'd be very
helpful.

Sincerely,

Gregory Burns at the Danforth Capsite.

Unfortunately, Lynx does not support JavaScript.

I see you are telnetting to the Free-Net; do you not have a
graphical browser where you are connected to the net?
