Toronto Free-Net is the GTA's oldest public dial-up Internet access
provider. Founded in 1993, TFN was the first ISP for over 45
thousand Toronto citizens. TFN is a non-profit ISP, free of
commercial advertising and committed to removing access barriers for all
citizens, because Internet access should be for everybody!
TFN's core operating costs are not covered by government
funding. Toronto Freenet relies on the contributions of its
members to fund the development and maintenance of its services.
The biggest single cost is for dialup phone lines. TFN is the
only Internet provider in the GTA that doesn't require payment to let
people dial in. By contributing, you are supporting TFN's efforts
to provide subsidized Internet access to disadvantaged citizens of the
GTA who would otherwise have to forgo Internet access from home, in
order to pay for very basic necessities. TFN strives to keep its
costs low. We rely on Free Software, previously owned hardware,
and volunteers. Even very small donations, like a dollar a week,
make a significant difference in supporting TFN in its goal to ensure
that all citizens can meaningfully participate online.
By becoming a member of Toronto Free-Net, you are supporting universal
Internet access in Toronto and the surrounding area.
